His proper left hand rests on his proper left thigh, while his proper right hand grips the horse's reins. The horse's proper left, rear leg and his proper right, front leg are extended back. Subject:  Portrait male -- Palmer, William Jackson -- Full length Equestrian Occupation -- Military -- General Object Type:  Outdoor Sculpture -- Colorado -- Colorado Springs Sculpture Owner:  Administered by City of Colorado Springs, Planning, Development, and Finance, Facilities Management, 30 South Nevada Avenue, 545 East Pikes Peak Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80903 Located Intersection of Platte Avenue at Nevada Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80903 Remarks:  In August 1909 the Palmer Memorial Foundation decided to expend at least $50,000 on a memorial for General William Jackson Palmer, who had died four months earlier. It took almost two decades to raise the necessary capital through private donations. On March 28, 1924, the Association hired Potter to design the equestrian statue. The granite base, made by Dodd's Manufacturing Company, was completed and shipped to Colorado Springs in April 1926. W. E. Davis, a Colorado Springs contractor, provided the concrete foundation. Edmond C. Van Diest was the engineer. The granite base was set on April 20, 1926; but the bronze statue was not delivered until 1929. The total project cost $32,000. The sculpture was sited at the then center of Colorado Springs, where General Palmer reportedly drove a stake into the ground in 1871. IAS files contain related article by Timothy R.
