Remarks:
Monument to Kalivas was originally conceived in July 1941. Contributions were made by the City of Manchester and the State of New Hampshire ($1500 each); $30,000 was committed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) New Hampshire Arts Project, only $1,485.88 of which was actually spent. The project was suspended during World War II and until 1957, when mayor and city officials reactivated the plan. The original multi-figural design by
Adio
de Bicarri was abandoned; Bourcier was commissioned to provide the bronze panel. Rock of Ages Corporation fabricated the granite base. The memorial was dedicated on Greek Independence Day, March 29, 1959. IAS files contain related newsclippings from Manchester Union Leader (March 30, 1959) and excerpt from David Ruell's "The Public Sculpture of New Hampshire," (New Hampshire Historical Society, Concord, NH).
