Description:
A large, deeply carved bas-relief panel featuring a semi-nude male standing with his feet crossed at the ankles, proper right leg over proper left leg. With his proper left hand he leans against a block of stone and with his right hand he holds a scroll up to his face. His head is bent and he looks down at the scroll. Painter's tools, a palette and brushes, are in the lower left corner. Sculptor's tools, a mallet and a chisel, are in the lower right corner. The bottom of the panel is cut in a zig-zag pattern.

Sr
. and Henry Higby Gutterson, of Gutterson and
Corlett
, were the architects of the Berkeley High School Community Theater building, a Works Progress Administration project. The theater was designed around 1939 and construction begun in late 1940, but stopped during World War II and resuming in 1949-1950. For related reading see Robert Bernhard's "Buildings of Berkeley, Phase II," Oakland, CA: Forest Hills Press, 1991. IAS files contain a City of Berkeley Landmark application for the Berkeley High School and the Community Theater.
