Description:
A memorial to Martin Luther King, Jr. consisting of a full-length portrait of Dr. King marching. Behind him, is a bas-relief of people marching, flanked by panels with scenes from King's life and text of key speeches from 1963 to 1968, including "I Have a Dream..." King walks with his proper left foot forward, his arms outstretched, mouth open. He wears a tie and open jacket. The first row of people marching in the bas-relief, consists of three men in jackets and ties, arm-in-arm with a young boy and a woman in a knee-length dress. The man on the right holds two books in his hand, while the man on the left carries the American flag. A crowd is gathered behind the first row of people. The panel to the sculpture's right shows Dr. King with his hands crossed over his chest. The three panels to the sculpture's left show Dr. King speaking at a podium; sitting behind jail bars; and standing next to his wife. A polished granite bench is placed across from the monument. On the back of the wall of the bench is an engraved picture of the balcony on which Dr. King was assassinated. The monument is approached by a concrete path, placed in a planted setting and lit by flood lights.

Remarks:
The memorial cost $325,000. Funds were donated from the City of Albany ($75,000) and private donors, churches and schools. Daniel Hershberg designed the memorial which was created by Eileen Barry. Alcide Santoni of the Colonie Masonry was the engraver. The artist based her creation of the sculpture, partly on her study of photographs and films of Martin Luther King, Jr. The bas-relief was created using living models. IAS files contain a transcription of the text on the panels and articles from the Times Union (Albany, NY), Oct. 11, 1993, pg. B-6; and Oct. 12, 1993.
