    Remarks:
The monument commemorates physician General Joseph Warren (1741-1775). Dr. Warren was born in Roxbury and was a graduate and master at Roxbury Latin School. A graduate of Harvard, he drafted the Suffolk Resolves urging opposition by force, if necessary, to British taxes. He was president of the third provincial Congress. He was killed in the battle of Bunker Hill. The monument was erected by the Joseph Warren Monument Association, formed in 1874. Funds from this association and the Jonathan Phillips Fund were used to pay for the statue and development of its original lot on Warren Street. Originally installed on Warren street, the monument remained there for sixty years until traffic patterns were redesigned. It was then placed in storage at Franklin Park. In 1969, the Roxbury Latin School "rescued" and relocated the monument to school grounds. It was rededicated in 1970 at the School's 325th convocation.
The original granite pedestal was inscribed: JOSEPH WARREN/1741-1775/PHYSICIAN-ORATOR-PATRIOT/KILLED AT BUNKER HILL/17 JUNE 1775/WHEN LIBERTY IS THE PRIZE/WHO WOULD SHUN THE WARFARE/WHO WOULD STOOP/TO WASTE A COWARD THOUGHT ON LIFE?/24 AUGUST 1774. JOSEPH WARREN. IAS files include photocopy of statue on original base, from "Monument to Joseph Warren," Boston: Municipal Printing Office, 1905.
