Remarks:
Funds for erecting the memorial were provided by the State of Arizona. Luke was a World War I combat pilot posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1919. The sculpture was toppled from its base during an automobile accident, but was restored. IAS files contain copy of related article from Arizona Republic (Phoenix, AZ) Oct. 21, 1975 and copy of related 1929 state legislation (House Bill No. 150) appropriating funds for the sculpture.
