Description:
A bronze miniature coal burning train engine sits atop a three-tiered marble base. The engine, known as the General, was seized on April 12, 1862 by a group of twenty-two Union spies at Big Shanty, Georgia and chased to Chattanooga, Tennessee by Confederate soldiers and railroad men who eventually recaptured the train. The Union spies were led by J. J. Andrews, who proposed the plan to capture the train and drive it back to Chattanooga, burning bridges and cutting telegraph wires along the way. On the base are reliefs of canteens, bayonets, swords, hats, ammunition pouches, and flags. A brick walk encircles the monument and the graves of eight soldiers who were executed as Union spies.

Remarks:
IAS files contain a related article from the Civil War Centennial Commission of Tennessee, "Directory of Civil War Monuments and Memorials in Tennessee," Nashville, 1963, pg. 33 which provides the text of the base inscription bearing the names of the captured Union spies who were executed or exchanged, and those who escaped. IAS files also contain related newspaper articles available at the Chattanooga Public Library's Historical Collection clipping file which describe the actual train chase and subsequent events commemorating it --Tennessean (Feb. 14, 1932), pg. 17; Tennessean (Oct. 15, 1932), pg. 5; Tennessean (May 15, 1939). The article in the Tennessean (Feb. 14, 1932) notes that the engine depicted in the memorial is inaccurate since it has a coal-burning smokestack, while the 'General' has a wood-burning stack.
