At the invitation of Bradford Washburn, noted mountaineer, photographer and close friend of George’s father Belmore, George spent the summer of 1947 as a member of a party Washburn led to the summit of Mount McKinley. Washburn’s wife Barbara, became the first woman to climb Mt. McKinley and Washburn became the first to summit twice. Browne planned to paint on the climb. In addition to his climbing gear and food, he carried canvases, brushes, and oil paint. He finally had to stop painting at 11,000 feet when at -20 F his paint froze. This painting was completed after the climb. Former owner Louis Corbley was the long-time Chief Ranger of (then) Mt. McKinley National Park.
