Seated portrait of Edward Austin Sheldon showing a sphere to a boy who stands next to him. Sheldon wears a suit and has a beard. The young boy wears knee-length trousers and a shirt with wide round collar.

Remarks:
Commissioned by the New York State Education Department and funded with pennies collected from school children. The cost was $3,500. The sculpture was originally installed in the State Capitol in Albany. In 1922 it was moved to the Oswego State Normal School. In 1988 it was moved to the State University of New York (SUNY) at Oswego. Dr. Edward Austin Sheldon, a New York native, was an educator who developed "object teaching" and founder of the Oswego Normal & Training School in 1861. The sculpture has been designated a National Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
