Robert Ogden Doremus was Professor of Chemistry and Physics from 1863-1903. An excerpt from S. Willis Rudy's book "The College of the City of New York A History," pg. 154-155, describes him as "Easily the most celebrated City College Professor of this time, Doremus was the one best known to the outside world." ... helping "to secure for science belated recognition as being at least as important as the humanities and as respectable as theology."
