    Description: 
    A tall bronze lamp standard featuring carved marble relief figures of a Native American and a Puritan emerging from a square stone base at the foot of the lamp standard. The figures stand on opposite sides of the lamp standard which is also adorned with the raised image of Newark's city seal. At the top of the lamp standard are nine globe lights.

    Provenance: 
    Formerly located Intersection of Broad Street at Bridge, until ca. 1980s-1990s.
    Remarks: 
    The piece was created in 1916 for the celebration of Newark's 250th anniversary. It was originally installed at the traffic intersection in front of the Newark Public Library and marked the site of Newark's colonial market place. In 1977 when the intersection was rebuilt to improve traffic flow and the piece was relocated to its current site on a traffic island a few yards away. IAS files contain a newspaper article from The Star-Ledger (Newark, NJ), Jan. 11, 1977.
