Dedicated Jan. 1, 1900. Digital Reference:  Medium:  Possibly unglazed terra cotta on a limestone sill base. Dimensions:  Sculpture: approx. 11 1/2 x 17 x 1 1/2 ft.; Base: approx. 6 in. x 17 ft. x 6 in. Inscription:  (On shield:) TURNVATER Description:  Heraldic sculpture group in west gable end of Turnverein building. Two figures (male and female) flank a cartouche in which is an oval portrait of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, the "Turnvater" or father of the gymnasium movement. Jahn has a high brow, long hair and beard. The surrounding male figure's proper right arm is extended and holds what appears to be a flaming torch (now badly eroded.) Spaces are filled with festoons and scrolls.
