    Remarks: 
    The church shown in the painting is the Beguinage Church of Ste. Elisabeth and the white gabled two story houses shown on the right side of the painting are the homes where the women of the lay sisterhood (called the "beguines") lived. The Bruges Beguinage was founded in the 13th century and during the Crusades, wives of the Crusaders lived there while their husbands were off fighting their wars. The last "beguine" lived at the Beguinage in 1926 and since 1937 it has become a convent for Benedictine nuns.
