Description:
Full-length figure of American shipmaster and explorer, Captain Robert Gray standing on a carved wood base. Captain Gray is wearing a long coat and a naval captain's hat. His proper right hand holds a cane that extends down to the base. His proper left hand is in his coat pocket.

Remarks:
Robert Gray (1755-1806) was the first American captain to complete a voyage around the world. Captain Gray, commanding the ship Columbia, discovered the Columbia River, and it is from his ship that the river takes its name. Through his voyages, Gray laid the foundation of American claims to the Oregon territories.
