    A cast bronze portrait of "Espanola #21," an Espanola tortoise that lived in the San Diego Zoo for almost fifty years before being returned to its native Galapagos island home in 1971. The sculpture is set directly on the ground.

    Remarks: 
    This sculpture of a rare Espanola tortoise from the Galapagos Islands was donated by Margaret Raphael, donor of the land for the Chautauqua Institution's sculpture park. Espanola #21 was a tortoise that lived at the San Diego Zoo until 1971 when it was shipped back to the Galapagos Islands in an effort to encourage breeding in the hope of increasing the tortoise population. IAS files contain a newspaper article from the Chautauquan Daily, Aug. 4, 1992, pg. 20.
