Remarks:
These dogs were cast in the 1850s by the
Bartlett
and
Hayward
Company and are portraits of two Newfoundland dogs brought to the Chesapeake Bay region of Maryland by George Law in 1807. The sculptures were originally owned by Dr. Spencer of Westfield and were sold in 1951 to a Buffalo resident. In 1955 or 1956, Westfield Hospital, with the help of local citizens, purchased the dogs and installed them on the Hospital grounds. IAS files contain correspondence from Koppers Company, dated Jan. 8, 1981; a pamphlet entitled "The Story of Sailor and Canton," and an article from the Post Journal (Jamestown, New York), Nov. 27, 1994. The article and the Koppers letter list the media as iron and the SOS! survey lists the media as possibly bronze.
