    Remarks:
Commissioned for $2,500 by the Veteran's Association of the 4th Ohio, this monument is one of 20 honoring Ohio troops who participated in the Gettysburg campaign. It is also one of the few zinc or "white bronze" pieces in the park. It marks the position held by the 4th Ohio Infantry where they helped repell a Confederate assault from reaching the crest of Cemetery Hill. The monument originally included a shaft and a soldier figure on top. These were removed in 1976 because their weight was causing stress cracks to appear at the base. The shaft was leaning 7 degrees when it and the figure were dismantled. The sculpture (referred to as MN 309) is referenced in the Gettysburg National Military Park Archives. IAS files include an excerpt from "Gettysburg: Stories of Men and Monuments," by Frederick W. Hawthorne (Association of Licensed Battlefield Guides, 1988), which include a photograph of the monument in its original form and detailed dimensions.
