Inscription:  (On side of base, incised lettering:) A BICENTENNIAL GIFT TO THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES/FROM CITIZENS OF THE BEDFORD INDIANA AND/THE INDIANA LIMESTONE INDUSTRY - JULY 5, 1976 unsigned Description:  George Washington crossing the Delaware River in rowboat with his men. Dressed in military uniform, Washington stands near the front of the boat. Directly behind him, two men stand holding a furled flag. Nine other men are seated throughout the boat, which is surrounded by rocks. The sculpture is mounted atop a low rectangular base. Funds were raised through private donations. The sculpture was a Bicentennial gift from the citizens of Bedford, Indiana and the Indiana Limestone Industry. The sculpture memorializes the first victory of the Revolution as depicted in the Emanuel Leutze painting "Washington Crossing the Delaware." James Saladee assisted with the carving at McMillan Mill; Larry Grubbs did the initial stone cutting. The sculpture was previewed as it journeyed through communities in Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, and was exhibited in Washington, D.
