Dimensions:  Each Caryatid: approx. 8 ft. x 3 ft. 6 in. x 2 ft. 3 in.; Mausoleum: approx. 15 x 22 x 16 ft. Inscription:  L. Amateis / Gorham MFG CO Founders (Over mausoleum doorway:) HEURICH (Back of mausoleum, in stained glass window:) Peace (Interior wall:) In Tiefem/Schmerz Kein/Weltweishein/Furs Herz signed Founder's mark appears. Description:  Four female figures, caryatids, are installed one at each corner on the granite mausoleum. All four are adorned with wings and stand with hands clasped in front and eyes looking toward heaven. Their bare feet rest on a low ledge and their heads touch the roof of the mausoleum. They are all dressed in long dresses with square necklines. Two figures have braided hair, one figure has hair which hangs down around her shoulders, and one figure has a cape pulled around her head. On the back of the mausoleum there is a stained glass window depicting an angel holding a scroll inscribed with the word Peace. Remarks:  Christian Heurich (1842-1945) was born in Germany, but immigrated to the U.S. in 1866. In 1872 he founded of the Christian Heurich Brewery was located in Washington on a site between the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge and the Kennedy Center, but was torn down in the 1960s. The Heurich family mausoleum was originally located on the family's dairy farm in Prince Georges County, Maryland. Mrs. Heurich moved the mausoleum to Rock Creek Cemetery in 1951 when she sold the farm. Tiffany designed the stained glass window located on the back wall of the mausoleum.
