Description:
Heroic seated figure of the Goddess of Peace. She wears a helmet and long flowing robes. In her proper left hand she holds a sword; the tip of the sword rests on the ground. Behind the sword, a round shield leans against the proper left side of the chair. The figure's proper right arm is extended and she holds an olive branch in her proper right hand. The bronze sculpture rests on a granite pedestal. The sides of the pedestal have three relief carvings of laurel wreaths.

Remarks:
The monument is dedicated to Civil War veterans. The sculpture was selected by a jury of nationally eminent artists including Augustus Saint Gaudens, Daniel Chester French and George B. Post. Cost of the monument was $12,500; $10,000 was awarded to Martiny and $2,500 was awarded to the architects,

Ross
. The monument was funded by the state legislature.
