The erection of the sculpture was part of a larger series of programs designed to celebrate the sixth centenary of the death of Italian poet Dante Alighieri. . That same year, the bust and its base were restored by Unico, an Italian-American association. Graffiti was sandblasted from the base by Jack and Cossie Saffioti. Connecticut artisan David Leaves stripped gray paint from the bust and applied a new patina. The work was relocated and rededicated at the Newburgh Free Library. IAS files contain a copy of a postcard which shows the work in its original location, Downing Park, dedication programs from 1921 and 1986 and related articles from L'Interpetre (Poughkeepsie, New York), vol. 1 no. 1, Feb. 1927; the Newburgh News, Oct. 12, 1946; the Middletown Herald Record, Oct. 7, 1986, and the Newburgh Evening News, Oct. 12, 1986 and Dec. 24, 1989.
