Remarks:
One of a grouping of three figures, the sculpture commemorates the Virgin Mary's apparition in 1846 at LaSalette, France, to two children, Maximin Giraud and Melanie Calvat, who were watching their cows in the French Alps. Mary is shown as she first appeared to the children. Sculptures of the children Maximin Giraud (IAS record NH000287) and Melanie Calvat (IAS record NH000288) are placed further up the hill from Mary. IAS files contain articles from the Manchester Union Leader, June 1, 1951; and The Canaan Reporter and Enfield Advocate (Canaan, New Hampshire), May 24, 1951, pg. 1; and May 7, 1953, pg. 1.
