A mustached and bearded Civil War soldier stands at parade rest holding his rifle in front of him with both hands, the butt of which rests on the ground at his feet. He wears a broad-brimmed hat and a bed roll across his chest. The sculpture is mounted atop a tall shaft set upon a graduated bottom. A cannon barrel projects from the bottom front of the base directly over two crossed swords in bas-relief. At one time, a cannon barrel also projected from the bottom rear of the base directly over crossed rifles in low relief. Only a hole remains over the design. Provenance:
Formerly located Intersection of Beech & Second Streets, Cochran, Georgia
Remarks:
The memorial cost $2,250. It was erected in 1910 under the auspices of the Cochran Chapter No. 764, United Daughters of the Confederacy, in memory of Bleckley County Confederate soldiers who fought during the Civil War. The sculpture was originally placed at the intersection of Beech and Second Streets in 1910; but was relocated to its present site (formerly the Cochran Elementary School grounds) when road work was done, either in 1922 or 1935. At one time, projecting cannon barrels on the base (one now missing) provided water for a horse trough.
