    Description: 
    The monument consists of a column topped with an allegorical bronze female figure representing "Victory." The column rests on a square base featuring four equestrian military figures, four standing military figures, two allegorical sculptures, two reliefs, and medallions. The four equestrian figures are located at the foot of the column, one figure on each corner of the base. On the next level down, four military figures stand, one on each corner of the base. Between the standing military figures, two allegorical sculptures representing "Iowa" and "History," and two reliefs adorn opposite sides of the base. The sides of the base also feature small pediments adorned with four large medallions and rows of smaller medallions. The military figures include an artilleryman, cavalryman, marine, and infantryman.

    Remarks: 
    The bronze figures and reliefs were executed in 1890-1892 after designs by Harriet Ketcham of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. The whole work was completed in 1896. It was funded by the State of Iowa mostly with refunds received from the federal government. The cost was $155,000. IAS files include a related article from the Des Moines Register, July 22, 1962 and the text of the inscriptions.
