Remarks:
The statue is reportedly the first to be specifically commissioned by New York City depicting an American woman. The idea for the memorial originated in 1986 with Herbert Zohn, chairman of the Eleanor Roosevelt Monument Fund. The cost of the $1.3 million dollar memorial was funded in part by more than 2,000 donors. The site is near the spot in Riverside Park where the Mrs. Roosevelt took her son, the late Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr., to see shantytowns in which people lived during the Depression. Mrs. Roosevelt's great grand-daughter Phoebe Roosevelt, served as a model for the upper portion of the body.
