Inscription:  (Plaque on front of base:) THE REVEREND FATHER STRUB C.S.SP./FOUNDER/DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY/1878 unsigned Description:  Portrait of Reverend Father Strub standing with his proper left hand clutching a book to his chest. His ecclesiastical attire consists of long robes tied at the waist, a waist-length cloak and a small hat. He stares straight ahead. He was pastor of St. Mary's Church in Sharpsburg until Bishop Domenec requested that he make plans for opening a school. The school, called Holy Ghost College, was founded in 1878 and became known as Duquesne University. Father Strub died on January 27, 1890. The Duquesne University Library contains typed manuscripts, "Sidelights on the Early History of Duquesne University," "Short History of Duquesne University," and Darner, F. A., "History of Duquesne University: First Plans and Founding," ca. 1930s, which contain additional information on this sculpture. Condition:  Surveyed 1995 May. Treatment needed.
