    The sculpture commemorates the artist's wife, who died in 1857, and her children, who died two years earlier in a boating accident. The sculpture overlooks the spot on the Schuykill River where the babies drowned.
    The Laurel Hill Cemetery has been designated a National Historic Landmark.
