The bronze plaque was donated to the town of New Salem by Lt. Col. Fiske Rolls of Braintree, a descendent of William Stacy through Stacy's son Benjamin. The plaque was accepted by the town and was attached to a granite marker which was formerly the door step of the New Salem Academy dormitory. Col. Rolls prepared the inscription based on an article in the Boston Herald, April 19, 1953, which was based on an account detailed in John Arner Barber's "History and Antiquities of Every Town in Massachusetts," Worcester, MA: Dorr, Howland & Company, 1839. IAS files contain a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C - Monuments questionnaire. For additional information see the Enterprise & Journal (Orange, MA), Oct. 4, 1956 and Oct. 11, 1956.
