Remarks:
Father Joseph Strub came to the United States from Germany, an exile because of his opposition to Bismarck. He was pastor of St. Mary's Church in Sharpsburg until Bishop Domenec requested that he make plans for opening a school. The school, called Holy Ghost College, was founded in 1878 and became known as Duquesne University. Father Strub died on January 27, 1890. The Duquesne University Library contains typed manuscripts, "Sidelights on the Early History of Duquesne University," "Short History of Duquesne University," and Darner, F. A., "History of Duquesne University: First Plans and Founding," ca. 1930s, which contain additional information on this sculpture.
