Description:
Wall installation in lobby of parking garage designed to recreate the front porch of the home of Biddy Mason. Includes a photo wall panel of the actual front porch and the adjacent wall contains the sculpted version. A fence, house siding and a window adorn this wall. Behind the window glass are fabric, a bottle holding flowers, a fan and a framed photograph of Biddy Mason.

Remarks:
Funded with a National Endowment for the Arts, Art in Public Places grant of $5,580 given in 1986 to The Power of Place organization. Funds were also provided by the Community Redevelopment Agency and private donations. Developed through the One Percent for the Arts program. This site, a parking garage, was formerly the home of Biddy Mason (1818-1891), a freed enslaved individual and early African American homeowner in Los Angeles. She was a nurse, midwife, founder of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church and philanthropist.
