    Description:
Bronze relief depicting the Old Testament story of "Rebecca at the Well" is installed on a center vertical element which is flanked by two stone benches. On the relief, the barefoot figure of Rebecca, dressed in long robes with a cloth over her head, stands at the well holding a large jug with both hands. She faces the barefoot figure of a shepherd also dressed in long robes which cover his head. He approaches her carrying a staff in his proper left hand. Two camels are visible in the background between the two figures. A quote from the Bible runs along the bottom of the relief. Below the relief is an inscription which has a small rectangular plaque in the middle. Below the inscription is a three-sided, semi-circular protrusion adorned along the top with a woven pattern. A small circular plaque appears below the decorative weaving. On either side of the tall vertical element are simple stone benches.

    Provenance:
Formerly located Median on Spring Garden Street at Twelfth Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1908-1922.
    Remarks:
Rebecca Darby Smith made a bequest of $5,000 for a fountain for the City of Philadelphia. When this fountain was installed on the median garden strip that divided Spring Garden Street at Twelfth Street, the relief of Rebecca at the Well was placed above a water fountain and bench with a horse trough in front. The architectural design was by Eyre, Cope, and Edgar V. Seeler. In 1922, the piece had to be moved because the median strip on Spring Garden Street was removed by the Bureau of Highways. It was later reconstructed and in 1934 it was reinstalled at its present site without the fountain.
