Description:
An almost circular slab of sandstone leans toward the south, supported by a steel rod which leans north and goes through the center of the slab. As the slab is a sundial, it is incised on both sides with markings including two sets of the numbers 1 through 12, marking the 24 hour day. The steel rod, which extends approximately 2 feet out of the north face, serves as a gnomon, casting the shadow that tells the time.

Administered by City and County of Denver, Department of Parks & Recreation, 2300 15th Street, Suite 150, Denver, Colorado 80202
Located Cranmer Park, 3rd & Clermont, Denver, Colorado
Remarks:
Funded by gifts of private individuals, the Denver Junior Chamber of Commerce, and the donations of several stone, masonry, and construction companies. Cost: approx. $10,000. This sundial is a replacement for the original sundial that was donated by George E. Cramner, installed in 1941, and destroyed by vandals who bombed the sundial with dynamite in September 1965. The original sundial was designed by Stephen A. Ionides, based on a small Chinese antique sundial. The replacement sundial was created by Milt Erickson and the Erickson Memorial Company. Preliminary cutting and grinding was performed by the Mack Marble & Tie Company. The stainless steel gnomon was provided by Coors Porcelain. Colorado Masonry Contractors were responsible for the installation.
(Flagstone at base of north face of sundial reads:) ANCIENT CHINESE TYPE SUN DIAL (and includes Stephen A. Ionides' name) (Another inscription at base reads:) Erected in 1941, the original sundial added distinction to a beautiful city. It stands again, replaced by the people of Denver in cooperation with the Denver Junior Chamber of Commerce as a testament of their belief in the beauty of this city. (Flagstones in front of both north and south faces of sundial include text describing how to read the sundial accurately). IAS files contain copies of newspaper articles from the Rocky Mountain News, Sept. 16, 1965 and Sept. 17, 1965, pg. 5, which discuss the bombing of the original sundial; and Rocky Mountain News, Feb. 2, 1966, pg. 2, which discusses creation of replacement sundial and dedication plans; Denver Post, March 16, 1966, pg. 3, which discusses installation and donations by firms, and includes photograph of installation; and Denver Post, March 22, 1966, pg. 16, which includes photograph of dedication.
