Two sides of the base are adorned with a small bronze relief of a lion. Vernon Place, Washington Monument, Baltimore, Maryland 21201 Provenance:  Formerly located Mt. Vernon Place, West Garden, Baltimore, Maryland 21201 1885-1916. Remarks:  This sculpture is one of five bronzes by Barye that were given to the City of Baltimore by wealthy businessman William Thompson Walters in 1885. Originally, all five were installed in the West Garden of Mt. Vernon Place. In 1916, due to landscaping improvements, the five bronzes were relocated to the area around the Washington Monument. The lion is a copy of one that Barye created for the Garden of the Tuileries in Paris in 1847.
