Description:
Full-length portrait of John H. Reagan. He is standing in front of an oversized armchair. He wears a suit with bow tie and a long overcoat. His proper left arm is extended as if gesturing. The bronze sculpture stands on a multi-stepped concrete base. Extended out in front of the center of the base is a block. Seated on the block is the full-length bronze figure of a Roman soldier depicting the lost cause of the Confederacy. He wears a helmet, a cloak draped around his waist and across his knees, and sandals. His helmet has 13 stars on the front of it, depicting the Confederate states. He sits with his proper right elbow on his proper right knee, resting his chin on his proper right hand which is balled into a fist. His proper left arm is slightly bent. His feet rest on an outcropping of the concrete base.

Remarks:
Reagan served as Texas state Congressman and Senator and served as Postmaster General and Secretary of the Treasury for the Confederate States. The monument was proposed by the John H. Reagan Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Coppini was selected for the commission by competition. The base was originally located at the intersection of Spring and Palmer Streets; it was moved to the intersection of Houston and Main Streets in 1908 and moved again in 1911 to Reagan Park, at which time the sculpture was installed and dedicated. The sword originally held by the Roman figure is located at the Museum for East Texas culture. IAS files contain copy of related article from Palestine Herald-Press, July 2, 1967.
