The sculpture was formerly identified by T. Perry Wesley as "The Spirit of the American Doughboy" by E. M. Viquesney. In 2008, the sculpture was identified as John Paulding's "Over the Top" (model 2043-A) based on a visual inspection by Les Kopel.
The monument was erected to commemorate the services of the Gentry County citizens who served in the world war, and was purchased through Allen Monument Works. IAS files contain articles from The Albany Capital, May 27, 1926, pg. 1, 4; The Albany Ledger, May 20, 1926, May 27, 1926, and June 4, 1926. One of the articles sates that the sculpture will be installed atop two granite bases on a cement foundation which will rise one foot above ground. SOS! survey identifies base media as grey marble. IAS files contain list of names on memorial's plaque.
