Description:
George Washington in military dress seated on a horse, his proper right hand holding his hat and his proper left hand holding the horse's reins. The eyes on the figure on Washington and on the horse are made of glass inserted into the bronze. The sculpture stands atop a tall granite base in a circular paved area at the foot of Pilgrim Steps between Bishop's Garden and the Olmsted Woods.

Remarks:
Gift of James A. Sheldon, an admirer of George Washington, who specified that Washington be depicted on a horse, Haseltine's Man O' War. (Haseltine's original sculpture of Man O' War is located at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky --IAS record number KY000272.) IAS files contain related article from the Washington Star, Jan. 23, 1955, which includes photo of a small model for statue; and copy of London News, Feb. 21, 1959, which includes image of sculpture to be unveiled Feb. 22, 1959. For additional information see also the Washington Post, Feb. 22, 1959, pg. B-1. Originally, the sculpture was gilded, but the gilt was removed following vandalism sometime in the late 1970s.
