Remarks:
John Quincy Adams suggested a design for the piece to the original sculptor, E. Luigi Persico, who then composed and executed the work in sandstone in 1825-1828. When the east central pediment was extended, the badly deteriorated figures were removed. Carl Schmitz restored the sandstone pieces and George Giannetti made plaster models and from them. In 1959-1960, Bruno Mankowski carved a marble copy of the pediment figures using the plaster models. Paul Manship supervised in the restoration of the sandstone pieces, the creation of the plaster models, and the carving of the marble copy. The original sandstone pieces (see IAS 75002488) are in storage and the plaster models (see IAS 75002489) are in the Cannon House Office Building.
