    Owner:
United States Capitol, East Front Portico, Washington, District of Columbia 20201
    Remarks:
This sculpture and its companion, Peace (08850005), are replacements for Luigi Persico's original marbles (Peace 08850003 & War 08850001) which were formerly located in the same niches on the east front portico. Persico carved the originals in Italy ca. 1833 and they arrived at the U.S. Capitol in 1834 where they were installed in niches on the east front portico. (Goode's 1974 publication notes that the installation took place in 1853 and that the pieces were carved in sandstone ca. 1835.) Over the years, the originals deteriorated so significantly that in 1958, they had to be removed. The originals were restored by Carl Schmitz of New York during the U.S. Capitol Extension Project of 1959-1960. Then plaster casts were made by George Gianetti (War 08850002 & Peace 08850004) and reproductions were carved in marble by the Vermont Marble Company under the supervision of Paul Manship (War 75002480 & Peace 08850005). The new marble copies were installed in the niches to replace the originals and the originals were then placed in storage at the U.S. Capitol.
