    Description: 
    A full-length standing portrait of Thomas Knowlton, dressed in 18th-century attire with unbuttoned waistcoat, knee breeches, and high boots. He appears in mid-stride. A buckled strap hangs diagonally across his body, with a holder for the sword which is grasped in his proper left hand. The sculpture is set on a multitiered granite base.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was commissioned under the supervision of the State Commission on Sculpture, with funding from the State Legislature. It was commissioned by the General Assembly in 1893 and dedicated Nov. 13, 1895. M. H. Mosman cast the piece. IAS files contain article from The Hartford Courant, Nov. 13, 1895; excerpt from "Hartford's Outdoor Sculpture," exhibition catalogue (April 1981), Trinity College, Hartford, pg. 71-72. Woods modeled the statue after the portrait of Col. Knowlton by John Trumbull, Jr., 1735.
