Remarks:
The idea for the monument originated in 1988, with "Go For Broke" National Veterans Association Foundation, later renamed as the National Japanese American Memorial Foundation. Construction of the memorial was authorized by federal statute (PL 102-502), Oct. 24, 1992. The memorial commemorates Japanese American War veterans, and honors the patriotism of all Japanese Americans during World War II. Specifically, the memorial honors members of the 100th Battalion, 442nd RCT, and other units who fought, as well as the 120,000 Japanese American men, women, and children, who were held in relocation camps during the period of 1942-1945.
The memorial was designed by Davis Buckley. The Japanese Crane Monument was done by sculptor Nina Akuma.
