    Remarks:
The sculpture was installed in honor of Havilah Beardsley (1795-1856) by his nephew, Albert R. Beardsley. Havilah Beardsley was an early settler in the area, having laid out the original plot for Elkhart in 1832 after purchasing land from the Indians. Beardsley also founded the area's first saw mill in 1831, the first two flour mills, the first carding mill, and the first paper mill in 1847. The fountain was designed by architect E. Hill Turnock.
