Description:
Three irregularly shaped sections of welded 3-foot steel painted with murals on both front and back. The murals depict scenes of the San Francisco waterfront strike of 1934, of waterfront labor conditions in the early 1930s and the years since the strike. The sculpture rests on an underground foundation of concrete.

Remarks:
Cost of the sculpture was $80,000. The sculpture was funded by the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union, the mayor's Office of Community Development and other labor organizations and individuals. The sculpture was a collaborative effort between ten artists who formed M.E.T.A.L. (Mural Environmentalists Together in Art Labor). The sculpture is sited at the location where two strike participants were fatally shot on July 5, 1934. IAS files contain copy of related artists' statement and copies of related articles from San Francisco Chronicle, July 2, 1986 and San Francisco Examiner, July 2, 1986.
