(On bronze tablets on rear, right and left sides of base:) (Lists of names of Wayne Countians who died during the Civil War) unsigned
Description:
A Civil War soldier stands with his musket at rest, his proper left hand holding the end of the bayonet and his proper right hand in the middle of the barrel. The stock rests near his proper right foot. He wears a knee-length coat and a cap that is tipped to the proper left and forward slightly. The sculpture is mounted on a square base with a tiered cornice and tiered bottom. The sculpture is enclosed by a fence.

Remarks:
The sculpture was installed by the Ladies Monumental Association of Wayne County in memory of 353 Wayne County citizens who died during the Civil War. The sculpture cost $5,000. Contractor for the project was Joseph B. Leach of Brooklyn, New York. The sculpture was cast in Philadelphia. IAS files contain a full transcription of names listed on base.
