    Remarks:
Chief Menominee was head of the Pottowattomie Indian tribe which at one time lived in the area of Marshall County. The sculpture was funded by a 1907 state appropriation of $2,500. B.C. Southworth & Son submitted the winning bid to construct the monument. The firm of Novelli & Calcagni (Samuel Novelli and Joseph Calcagni) of Barre, Vermont carved the monument based on drawings submitted to the firm by Frank Southworth of B.C. Southworth & Son. For additional information see articles in the Plymouth Democrat, Sept 9, 1909 and Dec. 3, 1908.
Numerous Marshall County newspaper articles and Josephine Murphy in her publication, "Novelli, A Forgotten Sculptor" (Boston: Branden Books, 2003), list James Novelli as the carver, but research for the National Register Of Historic Places determined Samuel Novelli of the firm Novelli & Calcagni was the carver. The National Park Service listed the Chief Menominee Memorial Site on the National Register of Historic Places in Dec. 2011. IAS files contain excerpts from the National Register of Historic Places form.
