John W. Shaw was a soldier from Decatur County who was killed in the Philippine Islands during the Spanish-American War. The sculpture, which cost $1,000, was erected by his parents. The sculpture was vandalized in 1965, leaving the figure dismantled. The top half of the figure survived and for many years rested beside the base. IAS image files contain photo of the damaged sculpture. In 2015, the sculpture was restored.
