The central stone, which weighs 9,000 pounds, is rough-hewn at bottom and is progressively smoother until polished at top. Each represents a branch of the armed forces. The monument rests on a large star inscribed in a pentagon, which is formed from light and dark paving stones. Around the perimeter of the base are maps of North and South Vietnam, a mileage marker to Saigon and the dedication marker.

The monument was funded through private and public donations and cost $122,000. The designer suggests the sculpture depicts an exploding shell. In April 1992, a piece was broken off after being struck by a van and was repaired soon after. IAS files contain related articles from the South Bend Tribune, Nov. 12, 1989, pg. B, 1-2; and April 20, 1992, pg. A-1, and a copy of the blueprints for the memorial.
