    Remarks:
The monument was initiated in 1899 by the Norman Eddy Post 579, Grand Army of the Republic, who invited other G.A.R. posts in St. Joseph County to participate. The funding came from the County, who allocated $25,000, and from public contributions. The sculpture was originally installed on the northeast corner of the courthouse, before it was disassembled in 1967, to accommodate construction of a new city-county building. Amid protests by veteran and citizen groups, the monument was placed in storage until it could be installed at its current site in Oct. 1972. IAS files contain articles detailing the monument's erection and the later relocation controversy from the South Bend News-Times, March 30, 1902 and July 10, 1932, the South Bend Tribune, May 30, 1967, June 1, 1967, June 2, 1967, June 23, 1967, April 29, 1968, Oct. 20, 1972, Oct. 24, 1975, Nov. 18, 1986 and Nov. 12, 1989. IAS files also contain a transcription of the full text of the plaques on the pedestal.
