Construction of the Grotto began after World War I as a peace offering. Stones from Lourdes are among those which comprise the masonry. The statue of Mary was a gift of the Class of 1920. It was shipped from Lourdes. The St. Bernadette statue was a gift of the Kerwin family and the candles and candlesticks were a gift of Monsignor Rawlinson. A stone at the left of the Grotto reads: IN MEMORY OF DECEASED/KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS/COUNCILS:/BRAZIL 4377/SULLIVAN 8651/TERRE HAUTE 541/GREENCASTLE 6989/CLINTON 9441
