Provenance:
Formerly located 300 block of West Oak Street, on south side of street, Oakland City, Indiana
Remarks:
The monument commemorates soldiers of Company F 42nd Indiana Regiment who died in the Civil War, and was erected by surviving members of the regiment. The contract for the monument was awarded to William Kelley of Oakland City at a cost of almost $1,000. A committee was organized to raise funds for the project, with Dr. George C. Mason serving as an advisory member and contributing much financial aid. The monument was originally sited near the track of the Southern Railroad in Oakland City on a triangular lot given by Colonel W. M. Cockrum. When the foundation began to sink, the American Legion relocated the monument to its present site and installed it on a new foundation. At the time of the relocation the monument was cleaned with acid. Donations paid for a sidewalk around the monument.
