Description:
Atop a granite shaft is a full-length figure of a uniformed Civil War soldier in a sentry stance. He holds the barrel of his rifle at chest level with both hands, the stock resting by his proper right foot. The soldier wears field gear, including a cap.

Remarks:
The monument commemorates the soldiers from Henry County who served in the Civil War, the Spanish American War, the Philippine Insurrection, and the China Relief Expedition. It was erected through public fund raising, and was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 1924. The dedication was delayed a year because of a strike in the granite quarries of Vermont.
